Waylon Jennings' album Are You Ready for the Country was released in June 1976, only a few months after the outlaw pioneer made history on the compilation Wanted! The Outlaws, the first million-selling album in country music. Driven by hits like "Can't You See" and the title track, Are You Ready for the Country became the artist's second consecutive LP to hit Number 1 on Billboard's Top Country Albums chart. It also featured the track "A Couple More Years," which had been a minor charting hit for Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show in April of that year. Written by Dennis Locorriere and Shel Silverstein, "A Couple More Years" is a classic country ballad about a man falling in love with a younger woman, who in turn leaves him for someone her own age.
