By 1973, outlaw country pioneer Waylon Jennings had grown tired of the RCA executives who, despite having granted him creative control over his work, still tried to micromanage every single aspect of the recording process. Fed up with the label's constant meddling, he decided to record his next album at Tompall Glaser's Nashville studio, which was popularly known among musicians as "Hillbilly Central." Widely seen as a safe haven for artists in the outlaw movement, the studio's laid-back atmosphere provided Waylon Jennings with the artistic freedom he so desperately needed and the recording sessions for his next album began later that year. Produced with the help of frequent collaborator Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings' 1974 LP This Time proved to be one of his most successful releases since the late 1960s, reaching Number 4 on the Top Country Albums chart. This was largely thanks to its title track, a classic outlaw country tune about a man giving his former lover a second chance. Shortly after its commercial release, the promotional single "This Time" reached the top of the country charts in the United States.
