“Clyde” is part of a time-honored tradition in country music: songs about musicians. Originally written by singer-songwriter John Weldon “J.J.” Cale and appearing on his 1972 album Naturally, the song describes a musician who plays the blues to cope with life’s hardships, playing the electric bass while sitting on the porch. “Clyde” was quickly picked up and covered by several other artists such as Dr. Hook. But it wasn't until 1980 that the song truly reached mainstream success thanks to a cover by outlaw country pioneer Waylon Jennings, who recorded it for his album Music Man. Waylon Jennings’s version of “Clyde” was produced by Richie Albright and Ron Haffkine. It made it to Number 7 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles Chart, as well as Number 1 on the RPM Country Tracks Chart in Canada. Thanks to this single, as well the Dukes of Hazzard TV theme, Waylon Jennings’s Music Man proved one of his most successful albums.
