Waylon Jennings has never been to Spain or England, but he has to Oklahoma. "People tell me I was born there," he croons, "Lord, I really don't remember / In Oklahoma or Arizona / What does it matter." Written by Hoyt Axton,"Never Been to Spain" was originally released on the US singer-songwriter's 1971 LP Joy to the World and went to number 5 on the Billboard chart, as well as number 18 on the US adult contemporary chart in 1972. Waylon Jennings recorded his version of the song the same year as its release, adding it to his trailblazing 1972 album Ladies Love Outlaws, which introduced the term "outlaw country" into the musical vernacular. Waylon Jennings – who was on the verge of retirement at the time of recording – scored a number eleven position on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart with Ladies Love Outlaws, also spawning a hit in the Buck Owens cover “Under Your Spell Again,” which Waylon Jennings recorded with his wife Jessi Colter.
