"Over the Rainbow" is a ballad from the 1939 classic film, The Wizard of Oz. Written by the duo of Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg, the song was originally performed by Judy Garland in her iconic role as Dorothy Gale. Backed up by a simple melody and a dreamy chord progression, "Over the Rainbow" captures the universal desire to find a place of peace and happiness where dreams finally come true. Shortly after its release on July 28, 1939, "Over the Rainbow" won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Over the following years, it was covered by a wide array of artists, including Hawaiian singer Israel Kamakawiwoʻole, who recorded it as a medley alongside Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World" in 1993. A few years later, the punk rock supergroup/covers band Me First and the Gimme Gimmes imbued the timeless classic with their irreverent punk attitude on their second studio album, 1999's Are a Drag.
