Stabbing Westward may have taken eight years to release their first album after first forming in 1986, but ask their fanbase and they'll tell you it was worth the wait. Christopher Hall and Walter Flakus assembled the cult industrial metal troupe in Illinois and dropped four studio albums, weathering several line-up re-shuffles along the way, before announcing their split in February 2002. They later rekindled the Stabbing Westward flame in 2016 and released comeback album, Chasing Ghosts, in 2022. "Save Yourself" is tethered to a stomping industrial-sized beat and features nihilistic, metal-friendly lyrics as Christopher Hall screams and wails: "You cannot save me / You can't even save yourself / I can not save you / I can't even save myself." The track ultimately became the band's signature song, released as the second single from their celebrated 1998 album Darkest Days and their only top five hit on the US Mainstream Rock chart.
