"Blame It on the Boogie" songwriter Mick Jackson (credited as Michael George Jackson-Clarke)—who co-authored the song with his brother David Jackson and Elmar Krohn—originally had Stevie Wonder in mind for this disco-dusted floor-filler but ended up releasing his own version of the song via Atlantic Records instead. He went to number 61 in the US and 15 in the UK in August 1978. That same year, the song was taken up by The Jackson 5, who made it their own and recorded the definitive copy of the timeless party favourite. The single helped to restore some of the group's former chart glory (following five unsuccessful efforts), bringing The Jackson 5 back to the Billboard Hot 100 and taking them to number three on the R&B chart. "Blame It on the Boogie" was released as an advance single from The Jackson 5's thirteenth studio album Destiny, which was released in December 1978 on Epic Records.
