Recorded by The Jacksons for their 1978 album Destiny, the first LP produced by the brothers, "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)" was released as a single and made it to Number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 in May 1979. With its chorus ("let's dance / let's shout (shout) / Shake your body down to the ground") inspired by an ad-lib from Marvin Gaye's "Got to Give It Up," and its rhythmic pulse cribbed from Teddy Pendergrass, this funky disco jewel also peaked at Number 4 in the UK and Number 9 in Ireland and was featured in the movies This Is 40 (2012), Happy Feet Two (2011), and Skatetown, U.S.A. (1979). Performed by lead singer Michael Jackson on various tours, including the first leg of his Bad tour in 1987 and the Michael Jackson 30th Anniversary concerts at the Madison Square Garden in New York City in September 2001, the song was remixed and released on the deluxe edition of the late star's Immortal album of 2011.
