Chic conceived the indestructible disco fever dream "Le Freak" in 1978 after being denied entry to the famed Studio 54 club in New York City and penning a retort to the bouncer. The Nile Rodgers-helmed band certainly had the last laugh because they went on to score their first Number 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B chart-topper, cashing in 7 million sales and reaching Number 7 in the UK. Swapping expletives for the titular "freak" and irresistible disco bassline, the group channeled their frustration into a positive celebration of the good times: "All that pressure got you down / Has your head spinning all around / Feel the rhythm, check the ride / Come on along and have a real good time." In 2017, Chic was nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the eleventh time and the following year "Le Freak" was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or artistically significant."
