"Vital Signs" is the dramatic closing track on Rush's game-changing eighth studio album, 1981's Moving Pictures. This reggae-tinged prog rocker is assembled from Geddy Lee's melodic basslines and guitarist Alex Lifeson's ska-friendly riff while Neil Peart's drums work their explosive magic and sees Geddy Lee hauntingly repeat a line to live your live by: "Everybody got to elevate from the norm." The song becomes an unashamed homage to individuality and non-conformity, teaching us to subvert the status quo wherever we can. It's a fittingly far-out, freewheeliing, and uncompromising end to a prog-rock classic crafted by one of Canada's biggest and best-loved rock bands. Moving Pictures hit number one in Rush's native Canada as well as reaching number 3 in both the US and the UK while also picking up a Grammy nomination for instrumental "YYZ" (Best Rock Instrumental Performance).
