Taking their cue from the biblical ladder in the Book of Genesis, Rush penned their own slice of heavenly new wave-meets-heavy metal on the theatrical epic "Jacob's Ladder," the third track from the Canadian band's 1980 album Permanent Waves, which went to number three in Canada and number four in the UK. Written by renowned drummer Neil Peart and clocking in at over seven minutes Jacob’s Ladder paints the picture of a stormy day dramatically transformed by rays of light from the sun that beam down onto Earth, leaving the song's meaning open to interpretation. The sparsity of the song's lyrics doesn't help to shed any light on its true meaning but Neil Peart explained that the band looked on "Jacob's Ladder" as "a cinematic idea", with the outro ending the song on a note of philosophical introspection: "Follow men's eyes as they look to the skies / The shifting shafts of shining weave the fabric of their dreams."
