Few bands in the pantheon of Canadian progressive rock are as venerated as Rush, the power trio composed of Alex Lifeson, Geddy Lee, and Neil Peart. In 1975, the group was just getting started, recording their second album Fly by Night with the aid of their new drummer Neil Peart, who was replacing original drummer John Rutsey. Anthem,” the opening song for the album and one that would become a staple for the group, was originally written while John Rutsey was still in the group. However, it was Neil Peart’s dynamic drumming that brought it to life. Anthem was picked as the opening track as it provides an introductory taste of the new sound of Rush, featuring more aggressive and complex playing as well as an overall heavier sound. Anthem opens with an instrumental section before giving way to lyrics that espouse the philosophies of Ayn Rand. Fly by Night peaked at Number 113 on the US Billboard 200 album chart, and went on to attain Platinum certification for sales of over 1,000,000 copies.
