Though better known as a rock and roll hit from the 1950s, the origins of "La Bamba" can be traced back to Veracruz, Mexico. In its original form, the song showcases the traditional son jarocho style, marrying Spanish, indigenous, and African elements, and it is usually played at weddings. However, the most popular version of the song was recorded in 1958 by Ritchie Valens, who reimagined "La Bamba" into a rock and roll hit. This version, recorded with session musicians like Carol Kaye and Earl Palmer, gave new life to the original while serving as a tribute to Richie Valens' Mexican heritage. His rendition of "La Bamba" reached number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was inducted into both the Latin Grammy and Grammy Hall of Fame. In 1987, the track reached the top of the charts in the United States and the United Kingdom after Los Lobos recorded a cover for the Ritchie Valens biopic, La Bamba.
