The cheeky Champs unwittingly unbottled a citrus-sharp rock 'n' roller corker and pop culture phenomenon with their 1958 booze-drenched ode to tequila. Written by saxophonist Danny Flores, known professionally as Chuck Rio – whose infectious riff forms the backbone of the song – and recorded with LA-raised group The Champs, "Tequila" bubbled up all the way to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and the R&B chart and has retained timeless appeal, featured in a multitude of films and TV shows over the years, from Happy Days and Two and a Half Men to Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Cheech and Chong’s Next Movie, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It's also been covered by the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, The Ventures, Eddie Platt, Dr. Feelgood, and more. A frothy, Latin-spiced surf track, "Tequila" is largely instrumental save for its three "Tequila!" shouts that pop to the surface in praise of the Mexican alcoholic beverage.
