With its roots in a Mexican folk favorite, "La Bamba" had its first moment in the spotlight on the soundtrack for the 1987 movie of the same name – a biopic chronicling the life and times of Chicano rock 'n' roll star Ritchie Valens – and that same year popped up in summer-loving classic, Dirty Dancing, to soundtrack a scene in which Penny is teaching the guests to dance to a "La Bamba-like merengue". The song first became a hit all the way back in 1958, riding the crest of the rock 'n' roll revolution that had gripped the world by its cheeks. A leading light of the Spanish-speaking rock 'n' roll movement, Richie Valens remoulded the folk song into a hip-shaking Top 40 hit, which was given the cover treatment decades later by Californian rock band Los Lobos, whose rip-roaring, chart-topping version is one you can hear in La Bamba. Their track also became the fourth entirely non-English language song to go all the way to the top of the Billboard Hot 100.
