Although composed and originally recorded in 1979 by New Wave musician Robert Hazard, "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" was turned into a worldwide hit by Cyndi Lauper. Released in 1983 as her debut single, the song charted at Number 2 on Billboard's Hot 100, Number 1 on the US Dance Club Songs Chart, and Number 2 in the UK. It also helped push Cyndi Lauper's debut album, She's So Unusual, to multi-platinum status in America, where the record eventually sold more than eight million copies. A feminist anthem laced with bright keyboards, pop hooks, and Lauper's hiccuping vocals, "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" was recorded in the singer's native New York City with help from an all-star cast of side musicians, including drummer Anton Fig (who, alongside Paul Shaffer, performed in the house band for David Letterman's late-night TV show from 1986 until 2015), backing vocalist Ellie Greenwich (who co-wrote The Ronettes' "Be My Baby"), and The Hooters members Rob Hyman and Eric Bazilian.
