Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time” was the last song written for her debut album, 1984’s She’s So Unusual. The album already contained future hits “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” and “She Bop” but producer Rick Chertoff felt the album needed one more song. The last-minute song was written by the singer and Rob Hyman. Hyman described the writing process as one of those situations where you don’t know a person all that well but you suddenly start opening up and sharing things you might not even share with a close friend. At the time, both were going through breakups in their personal lives. Lauper’s breakup was with her boyfriend who was also her manager.
