"Flashdance... What a Feeling" is a song originally written by Giorgio Moroder for the soundtrack of the 1983 romantic drama Flashdance. Even though he was best known for his collaborations with Donna Summer during disco's heyday, the Italian producer was no stranger to film soundtracks—his work on 1978's Midnight Express won an Oscar for Best Original Score in 1979 and he also wrote original music for the neo-noir crime drama American Gigolo in 1980. Two years later, Giorgio Moroder jumped on board to produce the soundtrack for Flashdance, a story about a young woman who overcomes her stage fright in order to become a professional ballerina. Featuring Moroder's trademark synth-based sound and one of the most instantly recognizable choruses of the 80s, "Flashdance... What a Feeling" spent six weeks at Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified Gold after selling over a million copies. The track won Best Original Song at both the Academy Awards and the Golden Globes and earned singer Irene Cara a Grammy award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
