Released in 2011, "Ballad of a Southern Man" proved the making of Texan band Whiskey Myers; it was the song that helped take their second studio album, Firewater – released by Wiggy Thump Records in 2011 – to the Top 30 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and one that brazenly embodied the band's (often problematic and controversial, owing to their previously defiant commitment to the confederate flag) southern-raised perspective, making reference to the "Southern flag" and "Whistlin' Dixie loud enough to brag". Whiskey Myers – aka Cody Cannon (lead vocals and acoustic guitar), John Jeffers (lead guitar, slide guitar, lap steel guitar, vocals), Cody Tate (lead and rhythm guitar), Jeff Hogg (drums), Tony Kent (percussion/drums), and Jamey Gleaves (bass) – lay down a sketch of rural life: "Grandma's in the kitchen / Papa's done passed on / We sit out on the front porch / Just a pickin' on a song / And there's blood on the table / 'Cause we work for what we have / And I was raised in this land / I guess that's somethin' you don't understand."
