In 1979, American rock band Toto were attempting to prove themselves as more than a one-album wonder. Their debut album, 1978’s self-titled Toto, was an immense success. They knew they had to follow it up with something impressive to truly establish themselves in the big leagues of rock music. Their second album, 1979’s Hydra, was a unique collection of powerful rock songs that found the band considerably expanding their sonic palette by incorporating elements from prog-rock, hard rock, funk, and R&B. Considered by many as one of the album's standout tracks, White Sister combines oblique instrumentation with cryptic lyrics that have been rumored to be about cocaine addiction. The song was written by keyboardist David Paich and lead singer Bobby Kimball, and produced by Toto along with Tom Knox and Reggie Fisher. "White Sister" garnered acclaim for the intricate guitar playing and powerful chorus, and would go on to become a favorite among Toto's die-hard fans.
