Toto's "Africa" is one of the most celebrated songs in the history of soft rock. The song is built around its now-iconic synthesizer line, which came about as lead singer David Paich was playing around with his new keyboard, the CS-80. This brought about a sudden rush of inspiration as the melody and lyrics for the chorus came into being within 10 minutes. The rest of the band rounded out the song, which featured lyrics about the plight of Africa told through the lens of media depictions of the continent. Toto recorded "Africa" for their fourth album Toto IV. Released as a single, the song became a smash success for Toto, hitting Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and continuing to live on as an 80s soft-rock staple.
