Red-hot funk alchemists The Ohio Players formed in the late '50s but came into their own during the '70s, carving a place for themselves as one of the most unique purveyors of horns-brightened, groove-laden funk. Boosted by the commercial success of 1973 number one hit, the high-pitched G-funk-synth heralding "Funky Worm" – which has over the years been sampled by all manner of hip-hop royalty including Dr. Dre and Ice Cube – the group kept the momentum going for their sixth studio Fire. Released in 1974 as their second LP for the Mercury label, the band embraced their slower, sensual side with smoking ballad "I Want to Be Free." Clocking in at nearly seven minutes, tumbling drum fills from James “Diamond” Williams give way to satin-like falsetto backing vocals that chime perfectly with the soundtrack to Paul Thomas Anderson’s 1997 classic Boogie Nights, on which the song was later featured.

Their drummer wrote it and it shows. Beautiful job. One of my all time favorites.
