The opening guitar riff to Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger” may very well be one of the most recognizable pieces of music in pop culture. The driving palm-mute guitar, punctuated by sudden blasts of power chords, has been used in all manner of films and television since its release in 1982. That unmistakable riff was played by Survivor’s guitarist Frankie Sullivan, who co-wrote and co-produced the song along with keyboardist Jim Peterik. “Eye of the Tiger” is closely associated with the film Rocky III; in fact, the song was written at the request of the film’s star and director Sylvester Stallone, who needed a theme for the film after Queen denied his request to use “Another One Bites the Dust.” The version of “Eye of the Tiger” that appeared on Rocky III is the demo version of the song; the finished version was released as a single from Survivor’s 1982 self-titled third album. The song was a tremendous success, staying at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart for six consecutive weeks and earning the group a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by Duo or Group with Vocal.
