“Jump” is a song by the rock band Van Halen from their sixth studio album 1984. The keyboard-heavy song was a bit of a departure for the band. Although Eddie Van Halen's first instrument was piano, his groundbreaking guitar playing was a major part of the band's sound. Lead singer David Lee Roth wasn't thrilled with the addition of a keyboard but he supplied the lyrics. He got the idea from watching a news report about a suicide jumper where people in the crowd were yelling, "You might as well jump." He modified the phrase to mean jumping into action in life. "Jump" became the band's first #1. It also was the band's last #1 with Roth because the singer soon quit, citing creative differences. The band continued their success with several other singers, including Sammy Hagar, but "Jump" remains their biggest hit.
