American trio Sublime emerged onto the scene in 1992 with their studio debut 40oz. to Freedom, a melting pot of genres that tackled everything from ska-punk to reggae and hip-hop in their own laid-back style. Despite receiving mixed reviews due to its lack of cohesiveness, 40oz. to Freedom eventually became the band's second best-selling release in the US and one of the highest-selling independent albums of all time. Apart from the promotional single "Date Rape," the LP also featured a medley of Toots & the Maytals' "54-46 That's My Number" and "Ball and Chain," an original composition by the band. Considered one of the first reggae songs to become popular outside of Jamaica, "54-46 That's My Number" reflected on singer-songwriter Frederick "Toots" Hibbert's time in prison after being arrested for marijuana possession. "Ball and Chain," on the other hand, questioned the institution of matrimony and the notion that one should settle down and stay with one person for the rest of our life.
