"Scarlet Begonias" was one of the six cover songs recorded by Sublime on their debut album 40 oz to Freedom. The Grateful Dead composition, written by Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter, first appeared on their 1974 album From the Mars Hotel. Sublime's punk reggae version contains a sample of James Brown's Funky Drummer and a rap by frontman Bradley Nowell. The song is about a chance meeting with a alluring woman wearing scarlet begonias in her hair. Nowell's rap time-travels to the Summer of Love with a tale of tie-dyed adventures with this mystery woman. The two began a business together ("We sold some mushroom tea / We sold some ecstasy / We sold nitrous, opium, acid, heroin and PCP") that ended in some trouble with the law.
The backing track for "Scarlet Begonias" is available with background vocals or as an instrumental on Karaoke Version.
