Slipknot keep it gruesome yet soft-sounding on the 11th track of their album Vol. 3 The Subliminal Verses, for which they switched the goalposts to a more melodic sound. "Vermilion Pt. 2" is the second of the album's two Vermilion songs which conjure a fictional story of a murderer and his victim, using the bright red pigment of vermilion to add of blood to the proceedings. However, there is more to the song's narrative than meets the eye; dig a little beneath the surface to unearth a less obvious meaning. Is this victim even human, or simply an addiction that can't be fulfilled; "She is everything to me / The unrequited dream / A song that no one sings / The unattainable". Slipknot certainly provide food for thought throughout the Rick Rubin-produced 2004 album. Creepily fun fact: when Slipknot played the first "Vermilion" song live, they have previously switched from their ordinary band masks to "death masks"; each an actual cast of each member's face.
