In 2009, American heavy metal band Slipknot released their fourth album All Hope Is Gone. The album was lauded by fans and critics for its musical sophistication and eclecticism, and special attention was paid to the song “Snuff.” A downcast ballad about betrayal and heartbreak, the song was also released as the fifth and final single from All Hope Is Gone. “Snuff” was written by Slipknot frontman Corey Taylor; this represented a change for the band, as Corey Taylor usually does not write music, only lyrics. It was produced by the band along with Dave Fortman and Chris Vrenna. The song went on to become one of the band’s biggest hits, charting at Number 6 on Billboard’s US Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart as well as Number 12 on Billboard’s Canadian Rock chart. The single went on to be certified Platinum in the United States for sales of over 1 million copies. A version of “Snuff” was also made available as downloadable content in the Rock Band video game series.
