One of the more abrasive offerings on Nirvana's magum opus, Nevermind, "Territorial Pissings" shines a light on Kurt Cobain's vocals, opening with an isolated vocal snippet of the late frontman bellowing out the words to a '60s hippie anthem before the song kicks up a maelstrom of grunge-addled guitar noise. This introspective track sees Kurt Cobain contemplate his younger years ("When I was an alien / Cultures weren't opinions") while using his platform and voice to spread a sociopolitical message. Tackling the scourge of sexism that he had witnessed growing up, he employs the second verse ("Never met a wise man/If so, it's a woman") to convey his feminist standpoint. He also uses the song to express his disgust at the treatment of Native Americans treated in his hometown of Aberdeen, Washington. "Territorial Pissings" may be one of the lesser-celebrated tracks on Nevermind, but that doesn't make it any less impactful.
