Written by frontman Kurt Cobain as a way to capture the simplicity and naivete of bands like the Vaselines, Beat Happening, and Half Japanese, Nirvana's non-album single "Sliver" was originally released on September 1, 1990, by Sub Pop Records. It was produced and recorded by Jack Endino at his Reciprocal Recordings studios in Seattle, Washington. The song came about during a rehearsal with Mudhoney drummer Dan Peters, who was playing with Nirvana while his band was on a break. Even though "Sliver" only entered the college radio charts upon its original release in 1990, the song took on a new life after the success of their commercial breakthrough album Nevermind (1991) and its subsequent inclusion in the compilation Incesticide (1992), which helped the single reach Number 19 on the US Alternative Airplay chart. In the following years, an acoustic demo of the song appeared in the box set With the Lights Out (2004) and the compilation album Sliver: The Best of the Box (2005).
