The simple things in life are often the most pleasurable for some, according to late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain who takes playful aim at hangovers and telly addicts on "Dumb," which stands out as a softer outlier smack-bang in the middle of their 1993 classic album, In Utero, sandwiched in between the angstier "Francis Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle" and "Very Ape." It even has cello running through it. Whether "Dumb" is an insult or tribute to the people it describes is up for debate; Kurt Cobain was ambiguous in a 1993 interview with Melody Maker about the song. One thing's for certain though, "Dumb" is an exercise in sweeter, poppier melody than many of the other spiky, bile-fueled tracks on In Utero, and perhaps its songwriting origins in the summer of 1990 had something to do with its tender sensibility. "Dumb" was never released as a single but did make it to Number 37 on the US Alternative National Airplay chart, which was published by the Billboard sister publication, Radio & Records.
