"Sweet Home Alabama" is a song by the Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd. Released in 1974, the song was written in response to Neil Young's "Southern Man" and "Alabama", both of which were critical of the South's treatment of blacks. Young is mentioned by name in the lyrics "Well I heard Mister Young sing about her / Well I heard ol' Neil put her down / Well I hope Neil Young will remember / A southern man don't need him around anyhow." Written by Ronnie Van Zant, Rossington, and Ed King, the lyrics mention blue skies, family, the Alabama-based session musicians nicknamed The Swampers, and refer to the governor, who was then the segregationist George Wallace. Rossington defends the song against being racist, saying the line about the governor is followed by "boo" meaning they weren't supporters. When three band members, including Van Zant, died in a plane crash in 1977, Neil Young performed "Sweet Home Alabama" at the memorial.
