Brooklyn-based genre-mashing adventurers Lake Street Dive assembled in 2004 at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston and have since released a raft of well-received albums and singles. "Hypotheticals" is taken from the outfit's seventh studio album Obviously, which was released in March 2021 and deals with a plethora of topical issues including climate change, and treads a retro soul-funk path, ridged with a danceable groove. "I've been playing out a lot of hypotheticals in my mind / I've been writing your name down next to mine / Been imagining all the things you and I could do / I've seen all the possibilities in my dreams / You're alone when you should really be next to me / Baby, let's not wait and see," sings lead singer Rachel Price in the catchy chorus. Lake Street Dive gleaned inspiration for the song's video from the 1998 Jim Carrey-starring movie The Truman Show, with the band popping up on multiple screens in the visuals produced and directed by Oskar Peacock.
