Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues” is one of the pioneering songs from the “outlaw country” subgenre, a version of American country music that focuses on the stories of outlaws and prisoners. Written by the Man in Black himself, legendary singer-songwriter Johnny Cash, “Folsom Prison Blues” was first released as a single in December 1955, and was later included in his debut album Johnny Cash with His Hot and Blue Guitar. Johnny Cash was inspired to write the song after watching the film Inside the Walls of Folsom Prison while he was serving in the Air Force in West Germany.
