“Ring of Fire” was a song recorded by Johnny Cash and written by June Carter and Merle Kilgore. Before she became June Carter Cash, she and Johnny were singing partners but married to other people. She wrote the song while driving in her car late at night. It was clear the two were falling for each other and it was further complicated by the fact that Cash was battling drug addiction. The song was first recorded by her sister Anita Carter and was a minor hit. Cash had a dream that he should record “Ring of Fire” with mariachi-style horns, an unusual production choice at the time. The song with its lyrics about desire and its potential consequences, became one of his biggest hits. It was #1 on the country chart for seven weeks and is considered one of the best country songs of all time. In 2004, co-writer Kilgore was approached by a TV production company inquiring about using “Ring of Fire” for a hemorrhoid cream jingle.
