“Take Me Home, Country Roads” is classic John Denver. But the song that celebrates the beautiful state of West Virginia was written by three people who had never been there. John Denver finished writing the song with friends Bill and Taffy Danoff who had started writing the song while driving to a family reunion in Maryland. The couple was making up little rhymes about the roads they were on and even toyed with naming it Massachusetts. The three performed the song for the first time, reading the lyrics from a single unfolded piece of paper, and received a five- minute ovation from the crowd. Denver recorded it the next day. A few years later Bill and Taffy Danoff went on to score a big hit of their own as members of the Starland Vocal Band. I’m sure you remember “Afternoon Delight.” The backing track for “Take Me Home, Country Roads” is available with background vocals or as an instrumental on Karaoke Version.

it actually is in the key of G but i didnt realize that at first because i still dont understand guitar tunings and music theory like that, very professional people/musicians have tried to explain this to me. I learned the song in G on keyboards then thought i was wrong but they explained why that was right and it really is supposed to be played in G. i'm half west virginian thanks to my mother, this song is literally as important as any church song or patriotic tune or the national anthem! -
