Written by the creative tandem of Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff, the R&B/soul classic "Hope That We Can Be Together Soon" was first recorded by English singer Dusty Springfield in 1970 under the name "Let's Get Together Soon." In the following years, the song was turned into a massive hit by Philly Soul pioneers Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, who included it in their third studio album, To Be True. Released as the LP's third single in June 1975, "Hope That We Can Be Together Soon" quickly climbed to the top of the Billboard US Hot Soul Singles and entered the Billboard Hot 100 at Number 42, becoming one of the group's biggest hits. A touching tale of two lovers pining for each other, the song had the peculiarity of being one of the few singles from that time to feature lead vocals by bandleader Harold Melvin, who had largely delegated that role to singer Teddy Pendergrass. It was also the first of many collaborations between the band and female vocalist Sharon Paige.
