“Bad Luck” is a disco song by Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, one of the most enduring and memorable tracks from the short-lived disco era in the mid-70s. It was written by Victor Carstarphen, Gene McFadden, and John Whitehead, and recorded by the famous production duo of Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff. “Bad Luck” was part of a string of hit singles by the group, following singles such as 1972’s “If You Don’t Know Me By Now” and “The Love I Lost.” “Bad Luck” was also a two-part suite, with part 1 being released as the A-side and part 2 as the B-side. Its lyrics tell the story of a downtrodden man trying to come to terms with all the recent misfortunes in his life such as divorce and poverty, a reflection of the recession-racked 1970s. The song was a big success for the group, hitting Number 1 on the US Billboard Disco Action chart, Number 4 on the US Billboard Hot Soul Singles chart, and Number 15 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.
