Steered by the traffic-stopping high-tenor voice of Ted "Wizard" Mills, with co-pilots Vernon Sawyer, Wendell Sawyer, Keith Beaton, and the late Richard Pratt – who died in 2022 – revered vocal quintet Blue Magic assembled in 1972 and soared through the early to mid-'70s with a glorious run of talked-about albums that began with their self-titled debut in 1974. Featured on their first LP – which spawned a signature hit in opening track "Sideshow" – is "What's Come Over Me"; a masterclass in Philly soul from one of the best groups to do it. Sweeping orchestral swells and impassioned yet gentle vocals are woven like fine gold thread through the song's tapestry. And the lyrics are sweet gooey loveliness: "Just look at me now, seems like I'm floating on a cloud". Can you get any dreamier than that? The group later collaborated with Margie Joseph for a duet version of "What's Come Over Me" in 1975.
