On "Watcher of the Skies," Genesis enthrall listeners with a seven-minute-plus jazz-prog fantasy epic, which garners momentum as it progresses from silvery atmospheric soundscape into full-blown rhythmic masterpiece. "Watcher of the skies, watcher of all / His is a world alone, no world is his own / He whom life can no longer surprise / Raising his eyes, beholds a planet unknown," they begin, evoking a faraway sci-fi aesthetic. Written by Genesis keyboardist Tony Banks and bassist and guitarist Mike Rutherford, the lyrics nod to Arthur C. Clarke’s 1953 sci-fi novel, Childhood’s End, conjuring an alien perspective of a post-apocalyptic Earth. "Watcher of the Skies" is the first track on Genesis' 1972 album Foxtrot—the band's fourth studio effort, which followed 1971's Nursery Cryme and became their first album to make itself known in the UK charts, where it reached number 12—and was released as the LP's only single.
