Prog titans Genesis opened their musical box with a hat-tip to an English nursery rhyme, "Play me Old King Cole / That I may join with you / All your hearts now seem so far from me / It hardly seems to matter now," on a song that depicts a Victorian fairytale about two countryside-dwelling children. In true prog fashion, the 10-minute epic weaves in a wafty flute solo before erupting with electrifying rock instrumentation and white-hot solo guitar virtuosity ripe for headbanging. "The Musical Box" was featured on the band's third studio album, Nursery Cryme (1971) which former Genesis lead singer Peter Gabriel explained was inspired Great Expectations by Charles Dickens and the Henry James novella The Turn of The Screw. Nursery Cryme reached Number 4 in the Italian charts at the time of its release and made it to Number 39 in the UK in 1974.
