A theatrical burst of high-concept prog-rock with an unwieldy, abstract song title and plenty of tricksy, swirling instrumentation, "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" is Genesis at their finest: an arty show tune with a classic rock spirit. The song is taken from the band's 1974 concept double LP of the same name – which tells the story of a Puerto Rican adolescent living in New York named Rael – and locates the opening scene in 'early morning Manhattan,' where 'ocean winds blow on the land,' 'the Movie-Palace is now undone' and 'the all-night watchmen have had their fun' 'sleeping cheaply on the midnight show.' The album, which reached Number 10 on the UK Albums Chart and Number 41 on the Billboard 200 in the US, was the last Genesis LP to feature original frontman Peter Gabriel. "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" was covered live in the late '90s by Swedish progressive rock band the Flower Kings, who captured their version on their album Alive on Planet Earth.
