Although "The Cinema Show" was originally included on the Genesis album Selling England by the Pound, when Peter Gabriel was still on frontman duties, he didn't actually have a hand in writing the song. Opening with the ethereal twinkling of the 12-string guitar, the song was written by Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford and makes a reference to Romeo and Juliet as well as T.S. Eliot's famous poem "The Waste Land." "The Cinema Show" is as similarly unwieldy as the poem, clocking in at over 10 minutes and comprising a proggy instrumental stew featuring guitar from Steve Hackett, (who has called this his favourite Genesis album), far-out keyboards from Tony Banks and of course, Phil Collins's masterful drum work alongside Mike Rutherford’s bass. Selling England by the Pound was a commercial and critical success for Genesis, going to number three in the UK in 1973 and obtaining gold certification by the British Phonographic Industry and the Recording Industry Association of America.
