Released in the fall of 1972, "Crocodile Rock" by Elton John was the English singer's first Number 1 single in the US and ruled the charts for three weeks. Drenched in nostalgia and backed by a lively Farfisa organ, "Crocodile Rock" is a whirlwind of emotions, memories, and music styles. Recorded in the summer of '72 and produced by Gus Dudgeon, the songs features Elton John's trusted musical comrades Davey Johnstone on guitars, Dee Murray on bass, and Nigel Olsson on drums. Inspired by Daddy Cool's smash hit "Eagle Rock," this rollicking number was Elton's nod to the early days of rock 'n' roll. It also pays lyrical homage to Bill Haley's iconic "Rock Around the Clock." Despite being a fun song, it wasn't immune to controversy. A lawsuit alleged that Elton John and writing partner Bernie Taupin borrowed chords from David Hess's "Speedy Gonzales," but the case was amicably settled. Chart-wise, the song was a behemoth. It hit number 1 in the US and Canada and had an impressive performance in charts across Europe and beyond. Certified Platinum in both the US and the UK, "Crocodile Rock" became the anthem of the era, capturing the flavor and exuberance of youthful freedom.
