First envisioned in 1939 by writer Robert L. May, who drew from his own experiences of being bullied as a child, the fictional character of Rudolph is one of the festive period's most enduring and best-loved icons. When songwriter Johnny Marks brought the song off the page for Gene Autry to bag a US Number the week of Christmas 1949, little did he know he had birthed a perennial hit that has remained at the top of the cultural canon for decades. Chronic crooner Dean Martin sidled up with his version of the song in 1959, which was featured on his snow-topped orchestra-backed LP – also released that same year – A Winter Romance, glistening with a handful of other Christmas-themed favorites including "Let It Snow!
