Perhaps one of the most well-known Christmas songs of all time, "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer" was written by American composer Johnny Marks in the late 1940s. The origins of the song date back to 1939 when Johnny Marks' brother-in-law, Robert L. May, created the character for the department store Montgomery Ward. Inspired by the story, Johnny Marks decided to turn it into a song, which was first recorded by country music pioneer Gene Autry in June 1949. A few months later, Gene Autry's version was officially released to the pop music market, hitting Number 1 in the US charts during the holidays later that year. Soon enough, "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer" became one of Gene Autry's biggest hits and opened the door for subsequent Christmas releases such as "Frosty the Snowman" (1950) and "Up on the House Top" (1953). In the years that followed, the song became a Christmas classic and was covered by artists like Bing Crosby, Chuck Berry, and The Temptations.
