In 1969, seminal rock group Creedence Clearwater Revival was on a hot creative streak, releasing song after song that would go on to become enduring classics. Lodi'' is one of such songs, a roots-rock / country-rock track showcasing the band’s signature sound and melodic style. Lodi was first released as the B-side to the single Bad Moon Rising,” the lead single from the band’s album Green River. It tells the story of a down-and-out musician whose floundering career finds him performing small shows in obscure towns for uninterested listeners. That’s where the name of the song comes from: the town of Lodi, California, where the song’s narrator finds himself stuck and unable to leave. Lodi was written and produced by John Fogerty (who admitted he’d never actually visited the titular town prior to the song’s release). Like many CCR songs from this period, it went on to become a massively popular choice for performers, being covered by artists such as Emmylou Harris, Tom Jones, and many more.
