The folk classic "Cotton Fields," also known as "Cotton Fields (The Cotton Song)," was originally written by blues musician Huddie "Leadbelly" Ledbetter in 1941. The song entered the American folk canon after being recorded by the blues-folk duo Odetta and Larry on their 1954 album The Tin Angel, and was further popularized by artists like Harry Belafonte, The Highwaymen, The Delltones, and The Springfields. In 1969, "Cotton Fields" was turned into a hit by The Beach Boys, whose country-rock-tinged version reached the top of the charts in Australia, South Africa, Sweden, and Norway. Later that year, California roots rock act Creedence Clearwater Revival recorded their own version of the folk classic on their fourth studio album, Willy and the Poor Boys. Creedence Clearwater Revival's rendition of "Cotton Fields" reached Number 1 on the Mexican charts upon its release and re-entered Billboard's Country Singles chart at Number 50 in 1982.
