"I Surrender All" is a beautiful hymn written by Judson W. Van DeVenter and Winfield S. Weeden. It was first published in 1896. Lyricist Van DeVenter had been working as an art and penmanship teacher at a public school in Sharon, Pennsylvania. He had been involved with his Methodist Episcopal Church and would attend evangelistic meetings. He felt a calling to go into ministry but fought it for five years. While at a church meeting, he wrote down the words that marked his decision to turn his life over to the ministry. "I Surrender All / I surrender all / All to thee, my blessed Savior / I surrender all". Country artist Carrie Underwood included "I Surrender All" on her first gospel album, My Savior. She hopes the songs will bring others as much joy as they have brought her.
