Bob Dylan originally wrote "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" for the soundtrack to 1973 revisionist western drama Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, which was directed by Sam Peckinpah, but the gospel-tinged folk-rock song soon took on a life of its own. "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" tells a bleak story of death from the perspective of the film's Sheriff Conlin Baker, who is slowly dying of a gunshot to the chest. "Mama, take this badge off of me / I can’t use it anymore / It’s getting dark, too dark to see / I feel I’m knockin' upon heaven’s door," sings Bob Dylan in the first verse, before sealing Conlin's fate in verse two: "Mama, put my guns in the ground / I can’t shoot them anymore / That long black cloud is coming down / I feel I’m knockin' on heaven’s door." The song is one of Bob Dylan's most covered tracks, reworked and reimagined by artists including Guns N' Roses – who recorded a hard rock version for the 1990 soundtrack to the film Days of Thunder – Eric Clapton, Randy Crawford and more.
